ACTIVE ISOLATED STRETCHING

FINALLY A REAL SOLUTION

TO GET RID OF

YOUR PAIN

This technique helps

  • young people to avoid injury,
  • adults to treat injuries,
  • our seniors to reduce their pain and have a better life,
  • everyone to prepare for and recover from surgery.

The isolated active stretch technic is based on the respect of the myotatic stretch reflex. This reflex is the body’s defense mechanism to protect itself from injury by stretching too much or too fast. The myotatic reflex, stored in the muscle spindles, is triggered after a little less than two seconds, causing the antagonist muscle to contract. The answer has three components. 1. Time: duration of muscle lengthening 2. Force with which the muscle is helped 3. Speed: the speed with which the muscle is put into position. If any of these are compromised, an injury can or is likely to occur.

What exactly is an « AIS » session?

1. IT IS VERY EFFECTIVE AND DEFINITELY NOT A MASSAGE

Jean is going to assist you and not « massage » you. So it is not a massage session where you can relax and even fall asleep.

2. IT IS ACTIVE SO IT WILL REQUIRE YOU TO WORK OUT

« AIS » means « Active Isolated Stretching ». So « Active » it will be. By being active, you actually protect yourself against muscles tears and help your muscles to stretch.

3. RELEASE OF ALL RELATED MUSCLES IS NECESSARY

To fix anything in the body, it requires to treat « the body in its entirety » and not only the « visible consequence » ! Muscles are intertwined with each other and need to be treated as a whole.

4. THE REWARD IS GOING TO BE ALMOST IMMEDIATE

« AIS » is not easy and is not for everyone because it requires a real effort from you. And it will pay off well and pretty fast if you commit to it !

What is AIS?

Active Isolated Stretching (AIS), developed by Aaron L. Mattes, MS., RKT, LMT, of Sarasota, Florida, is a gentle method of stretching specific (isolated) muscles while requiring the active participation of the stretched person. Each stretch begins by defining the current range of motion (stretch point). The target muscle is then stretched beyond this range with continuous assistance continuing only for two seconds. The muscle is then returned to its initial resting position. Typically, eight to ten repetitions are required. The results are noticeable and often drastic.

What is AIS and how does it work?

Definition of AIS

The Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) method of muscle lengthening and fascial release is a type of Athletic Stretching Technique that provides effective, dynamic, facilitated stretching of major muscle groups, but more importantly, AIS provides functional and physiological restoration of superficial and deep fascial planes.

AIS (Active Isolated Stretching) was developed by Aaron Mattes. AIS is scientifically based on the two laws below as well as on Aaron’s 40 years of experience:

Sherrington’s law requires that muscles be associated with each other during muscle activation that engages a group of muscles and relaxes the opposite group of muscles (antagonist) at the same time. This is called reciprocal inhibition. The active engagement of a muscle requires nervous information from the brain to activate it (engagement) while the opposite muscle receives a neurological signal so that it relaxes. For example, by bending the elbow, the biceps receives a neurological signal to contract. At the same time, the opposing (opposite) muscle, the triceps, receives a reverse signal asking it to relax. Only a relaxed muscle can be stretched. It is not possible to stretch an engaged (contracted) muscle. When a muscle is activated to perform a contraction, it is the result of the person’s will. A muscle will go further « in stretch » if the opposite muscle is voluntarily engaged (contracted) by the person. This means that the range of motion will be increased by an intention.

Wolff’s law explains the protective mechanism of the body so as not to injure a muscle or tendon by too long a stretch which can cause a tear. Muscles and tendons have the ability to measure the tension applied to them. When a muscle is stretched beyond the maximum stretch point for more than 2 seconds, a protective signal is sent by the brain and the muscle contracts to avoid this dangerous stretch. This reaction is also called the stretch reflex. Violating this stretch reflex can cause muscle and tendon damage. Therefore, you should not maintain a stretch for more than two seconds.

Advantages of AIS

  • Reduces or eliminates pain
  • Increases blood flow
  • Facilitates healing
  • Increases flexibility or range of motion
  • Improves ease of movement
  • Increases the elasticity of the fascia (connective tissue)
  • Relieves physical and mental stress
  • Rehabilitates injured muscles and tendons
  • Restructures scar tissue so that it becomes more functional
  • Helps prevent many surgeries
  • Increases lymph flow to decrease edema (swelling)
  • Helps prepare tissue before surgery
  • Reduces risk of injury and re-injury
  • Improves posture: head, shoulder, chest and lower back
  • Improves breathing
  • Improves sports performance and conditioning
  • Eliminates pain and stiffness from many types of arthritis

What can you expect?

AIS is widely used by top athletes, elite athletes and the professionals who take care of them. Unfortunately, AIS is not known to the non-sporting or elite public.

What can you expect from an AIS stretching session?

You need to wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing so you can move around easily.
We need to know your medical history. From then on, a form will be given to you during your first appointment with a series of questions which will help us to prepare a specific program just for you. If you have an injury for which you have an X-ray or an MRI, thank you in advance for bringing these documents with you.
Remember that this is active stretching. So unlike massages, you will actively participate. Bring something to drink with you, water if possible.
Depending on the AIS program determined for you, a massage table, a chair or a standing position can be used for your session.
A normal session lasts 90 to 120 minutes. It takes a minimum of 3 hours for a full body treatment.

KEY PEOPLE

AARON MATTES

Aaron Mattes comes from a small town in Wisconsin where he learned « the hard way » how to grow and gain respect. He grew up in a peasant family, surrounded by horses, cows and work in the fields, in an sometimes unbearable cold. Her father died at the age of 46 from multiple sclerosis. Aaron therefore became responsible for the farm at an age when normally a child should spend time at school and having fun! No days off and no pay! Football and basketball helped him going through this hard time.

Aaron suffered a serious accident in 1976 which earned him 5 lumbar idols almost reduced to nothing. For 3 years, the pain was so intense that falling asleep only happened when it finally passed out! He finally got a surgery to fuse his lumbar disks and have his life back.

He obtained a Bachelor of Science from the Higher State of Wisconsin in 1970 with a specialization in physical education and a Master of Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1972, with a specialization in kinesiology and physiotherapy. He became the director of the physiotherapy clinic where he worked with thousands of polio patients.

Mattes was a pitcher coach for the University of Illinois baseball team from 1970 to 1976. In the past 45 years, he has spent more than 250,000 hours practicing sport, teaching sports and health, rehabilitation, athlete training, adapted physical education, sports medicine, training and prevention programs. When he took care of training local teams in Toledo for 3 consecutive years, no injuries requiring surgery were found!

He is a licensed physiotherapist and certified member of the American Kinesiotherapy Association. He is a licensed massage therapist and a member of the Florida State Massage Therapy Association and the American Massage Therapy Association. Mattes is a member of the Association of Administrators of Medical Rehabilitation and the National Rehabilitation Association.

He established his own clinic in Sarasota in 1979 where he had up to 25 assistants. He still practices in a smaller environment on Bee Ridge where you can find Aaron usually from 5 a.m. until often 8 a.m. He spends his time « repairing » his patients, avoiding others from being injured and sharing his knowledge for free with those who wish to learn from him. His faith in healing through AIS has revealed miracles, both in the field of traditional medicine which in some cases had admitted defeat, and in the field of international sport which has won several world records.

JEAN DEGLON

Jean Deglon, known as Jean in the States (he’ll tell you the story …), spent the last 30 years in the sport field in Switzerland, with acrobatic gymnastic teams. He practiced gymnastic himself since he was born until 2006. He had to quit because of shoulders problems. He trained gymnasts individually or in groups for local and national competitions for 20 years. He became a past master in order to train gymnastic teachers and coaches.

Besides his sport’s life, he is a software engineer and use to work for pharma companies.

He discovered aïkido in 2007 and this was like a revelation, or a reminder of what he wanted to do when he was a child ! Helping and healing people was a dream !

Jean went to America in Florida in 2012 to study Shiatsu Massage in a Traditional Chinese Medicine school. He graduated as Valedictorian at Acupuncture Massage School in Miami in summer 2013. Then he studied Active Isolated Stretching and took seminars about Reiki, Cupping and Qigong. Food healing is a matter he focuses on everyday.

He worked and studied every week with Aaron Mattes in his clinic in Sarasota for several months. Aaron is just a great and nice man that wants to spread his knowledge in order to help people.

After 7 years in Florida, Jean was definitely back in Switzerland in February 2019. Time to settle back and adjusting to the temperature :), using AIS to help people in Switzerland became one of his main goal.

Having the knowledge of « Opening up the body », « Breathing to oxygenate » and « Eat to heal » allows Jean to definitely help you.

SERVICES

What type of session?

The duration of an AIS session will depend on the objective set.

If this is about a known problem, well identified and for which we have already worked together?

Or do you need to prepare for a surgery for example?

Think of our subscriptions which offer far cheaper rates than providers in the public medical field.

PRICES

90 minutes

This is the minimum duration of an AIS session. Why?

AIS gives results very quickly, but to get there you have to follow a very specific muscle work protocol. A knee problem, for example, does not allow the practitioner to start his activity directly on the knee. The muscles around this joint involve the lower leg to the ankle as well as the muscle ties of the thighs on the hips.

It is therefore necessary to relax a large amount of muscle groups in order to reach the injured area or to be treated / strengthened zone.

90 minutes therefore just allows you to focus on a particular area known and often already treated in the past.

PRICE: 200.- (133.- / hour)

2 heures

A 2 hour AIS session will allow you, often during a first appointment, to become aware of your body, to understand the technique and to obtain the first results.

This duration is adapted to the hip and thighs problems and lower back pain as well as the shoulders.

PRICE: 250.- (125.- / hour)

3 heures

For a comprehensive treatment of the whole body in order to prepare for a special sporting event or to recover after intense effort, 3 hours allow you to obtain an optimal result.

This duration is also suitable for the stretching treatment of identified ailments followed by muscle strengthening work using our « Active Isolated Strenghtening » technique.

PRICE: 330.- (110.- / hour)
